SFP 73 - Episode 73: A Genuine Alternative: Differences Between Solution Focus and Problem Solving with Rayya Ghul, MA (Ed), Dip.COT

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast |38:58

“It (Solution Focus) ends up with the other person feeling dignified, respected, valued for their capabilities. And that’s just through conversation. It’s just through using different words in a conversation. I mean that’s magic.”

“The biggest thing that fascinates me about Solution Focus is that it provides a genuine alternative to problem solving for being helpful to people and to moving forwards into the rest of your life.”

“Everyone is facing just the challenge of being human and within that we are all doing an incredible job.”

“Everbody knows what they are like when they are at their best. And it’s your job to help people remember that.”

“You’re dignifying them with being an expert in their own lives and having the right and the capability to make their own choices and decisions and supporting them in that.”

Rayya Ghul

Show Notes

  •  the differences between better and different or the question „what differences would that make?”,
  • Solution Focus as a language for being useful for each other,
  • the differences Solution Focus can make for self-help groups,

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast |33:31

“When we know what people want all the other tools fall into place.”

“I’ve been very passionate over the years about training people in such a way that they end up using Solution Focus that kind of fits for them, kind of comes out of their mouth in a way that sounds right for them and is in some ways appropriate for the settings in which they work.”
John Wheeler

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with John Wheeler, M.A., Social Worker, UKCP Registered Systemic Psychotherapist, Solution Focused Trainer, Supervisor and Consultant as well as Board Member of the EBTA, about

  • what fascinated him with Solution Focus at the beginning and how his conversations changed,
  • how he and Greg Vinnicombe collected Solution Focused assumptions, categorized them into four groups, and have been teaching them,
  • how this focus on assumptions keeps him on track,
  • learning from our clients or an example of how adapting to the session rating scale (SRS) changed his conversation,
  • from roughly connecting to truly connecting to our clients,
  • Solution Focused Supervision,
  • to be mindful of our own special perspective and the different contexts,
  • their SF trainings and bridging quality assessments in a solution-focused way,
  • assuming people have resources, asking SF questions and being patient.
  • The Challenge of the Week: „Look out for what you love most about your use of SF, based on the benefit you see it bringing to the people you are working with.”

„Don’t ask yourself what Solution Focus can do for you. Ask what you can do for Solution Focus.”

„My personal feeling is that Solution Focus gives us agility.”

„I believe if we ran all organisations in a solution-focused way, that we could transform the world.”

John Brooker

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with John Brooker, Solution-Focused Meeting Facilitator and Innovator, Author and Co-President of SFiO (Solution Focus in Organisations), about

  • what fascinates him with Solution Focus,
  • what differences Solution Focus made for him in the beginning and how his team facilitations changed,
  • his constructive rant or how to turn difficult topics into „what they want instead?“ in the beginning,
  • solution-focused collaboration and his DNA metaphor,
  • how to navigate and maintain space and pace in team workshops,
  • his team impetus as an agile team metaphor,
  • SFiO (Solution Focus in Organisations) and vision as co-president.
  • The Challenge of the week: „Think about what you could contribute to the development of SF. What is one tiny little thing you could do today?”

SFP 70 - Episode 70: What's your URP? Helping Small Businesses and Charities to Grow with Andrew Gibson

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast |31:20

„It (SF) helps people very quickly and efficiently to make progress on their own terms.“

„If they tell me who else is involved and how it helps them and what differences it is making for them, for the other people involved in this, that’s how we start looking to see who is going to benefit the most.”

„People think of the action as the solution. (…) And of course, our solution-focused practice is to think about the outcomes and the preferred future before you take action. And that is fundamentally different.”

Andrew Gibson

Show Notes

In today’s episode, we talk with Andrew Gibson who is helping small businesses and charities to grow with Solution Focus, about

  • what fascinates him about Solution Focus,
  • a story of how he helped someone recently and the differences this question can make,
  • his Solution Focused process of how he helps small businesses and charities to grow,
  • what he enjoys most about his work and how he has a seven day „weekend”,
  • the idea of the URP (Unique Referral Point) and his new book „What’s your URP? Don’t just make a living; make a life.”,
  • what is helpful for small businesses to grow and how Solution Focus can be helpful in this process,
  • the shift from „doing“ to „noticing“ observable noticeable differences and the differences this shift made for him,
  • the challenges that people face who want to bring Solution Focus into the business world,
  • his passion as member of the committee of the UKASFP (UK Association for Solution Focused Practice) and SFiO (Solution Focus in Organisations),
  • the power of stories and why to make someone else the hero of the story.
  • The challenge of the week: „Notice when someone has made a difference and compliment the person for it.”

SFP 69 - Episode 69: Mutually Influenced: A Talk about the History of Solution Focus with Jonas Wells

by Elfie Czerny & Dominik Godat | Simply Focus Podcast |38:28

“Isn’t it amazing that for an approach that’s deceptively so simple, we are still fascinated. (…) And it’s not just my feeling of fascination, it’s everybody else’s and we are still gathering, we are still talking, we are still writing, we are still exploring, and things are still emerging which are new and fascinating. Isn’t that cool!”

“How can I be most useful? How can I be of service to the people around me, or my community around me, in a way that is helpful and useful? And putting myself in situations where I do it.”

“So, it’s interesting to talk about the conditions or the culture of the emergence of new ideas not just the new idea itself. Even now as we are talking (…) it will change. The history changes and what we now think is important or different or interesting has changed. And maybe it changes the way we take a step tomorrow.”

“The solution-focused community is a massive resource for people who are interested in this way of working.”
Jonas Wells
